Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather is a living material. It will darken with use, develop a patina from the oils on your hands, and soften over time. A few simple practices will keep it looking its best for years:

  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure. UV can fade dye unevenly. Keep it in your pocket, not on a sunlit dashboard.
  • Keep it dry. If it gets wet, blot with a clean cloth and let it air dry away from heat. Don't use a hair dryer.
  • Condition once or twice a year. A small amount of neutral leather conditioner (like Saphir Renovateur or Bick 4) keeps the leather supple and prevents cracking. Apply with a soft cloth, let it absorb, buff lightly.

Don't overstuff. The leather will stretch slightly to fit your cards and stay there. Forcing more than 10 cards in compresses the structure and shortens the life of the piece.

Full-grain leather. Vegetable-tanned. Built to age.

Full-grain is the strongest, most durable layer of the hide. The outer surface is left intact, which preserves the densest fibers and lets the leather absorb the oils from your hands and develop a patina that deepens the longer you carry it.

Vegetable tanning is the older, slower process. It's what allows the color to richen over years instead of flattening out. Most leather goods skip it because it costs more and takes longer. We didn't.

Seven tones. One batch.

Each tone is cut from the same vegetable-tanned hide and dyed individually, which means the color you receive will have its own subtle variations. The leather will darken and develop character with use. No two will age the same way.

Why a card holder. Why Madrid.

We've all carried card holders we loved until the stitching gave out, the leather dried, or the edges started to peel. We wanted to make one that didn't. That meant finding the right hands.

Spain has worked leather for centuries. Madrid is one of the few places where small workshops still cut and stitch by hand, using hides chosen to age rather than fall apart. After a long search and a lot of sample rounds, we found the workshop we wanted to build this with.

Eighteen months later, here it is.
